Le Forum contre la violence policière et l’impunité est une initiative populaire dont le thème se concentre sur la violence policière et l’impunité qui affectent plusieurs communautés à Montréal, dont les communautés pauvres et racisées, les travailleuses et travailleurs du sexe, les gens de la rue, les jeunes et les autochtones. Il aura lieu dans le quartier ouvrier et multiethnique de Parc-Extension du 29 au 31 janvier 2010, et sera un espace pour échanger entre nous, organiser nos énergies  collectives dans le but de construire un futur sans violence policière, ainsi que pour commémomer les injustices commises par la police contre nos communautés.

Un des thèmes que nous aborderons vise à garder vivante la mémoire de ceux et celles dont les vies ont été volées par la police, dans une société qui tente de cacher et d’oublier cette réalité. À ce sujet, un des panels qui prendra place dans le cadre du Forum, intitulé “Plus jamais! Des familles dénoncent les bavures policières et l’impunité“, présentera des familles de victimes de bavures policières et exposera les injustices auxquelles celles-ci ont dû continuer à faire face dans leurs quêtes de réponses, de vérité et de justice.

Bien que nous ne puissions offrir qu’un espace limité lors de ce panel pour que des familles puissent s’exprimer sur la réalité des bavures policières au Québec, avec un focus sur Montréal, nous savons bien qu’il existe d’innombrables cas de bavures policières au Canada.

Afin de nous souvenir de ceux et celles dont les vies ont été volées par la police, le Forum contre la violence policière et l’impunité lance un appel pan-canadien pour des photos et témoignages portant sur les victimes de bavures policières, par ceux et celles qui les connaissaient. Ces témoignages seront mis-en-page et imprimés pour être exposés durant le Forum.

The Forum Against Police Violence and Impunity is a grassroots initiative focusing on the police violence and impunity that affects the lives of many communities in Montreal, including poor and racialized communities, sex-workers, those living on the street, youth and indigenous communities.  Taking place in the working-class multi-racial neighborhood of Park Extension from January 29-31, 2010, it will provide a space to learn from each other and strategize collectively to build a future without police violence, as well as to remember those injustices which have been committed against our communities.

One of the themes we are focusing on is keeping alive the memories of those whose lives have been taken by the police, in a society which tries to silence and forget this reality.  On this topic, we have a panel entitled: “Never again! Families speak out against police killings and impunity”, featuring the families of some of those who have been killed by the police and the injustices they have continued to face in their attempts to find answers, while seeking accountability & justice.  Though we are only able to provide a limited platform on this panel for families to speak to the reality of police murders in the province of Quebec, with a focus on Montreal, we recognize that there are countless other cases of police killings across the country. 

In the name of remembering those whose lives have been taken by the police, the Forum Against Police Violence and Impunity is doing a Canada-wide call-out for photos and written testimonials about victims of police murders, by those who knew them.  These testimonials will be formatted and printed, and displayed on-location during the Forum.

Synopsis and Director’s Statement:

A unique and provocative view into the great divide between “the people” and “the police”.

“No justice!” “No peace!” “No justice!” “No peace!” In recent years, the rising of this chant from the streets has escalated in answer to seemingly endless incidents of police brutality. When filming started on IF I DIE TONIGHT, following the shooting of Amadou Diallo by four members of the controversial and elite New York City Police Department Street Crimes Unit, we were simply going to follow this chant through the streets of New York City. We couldn’t. When we got into the streets ourselves, we found individual stories that had to go deep. And, we couldn’t ignore the breadth of this issue by leaving out the other side of the story–we had to go to the police. So, IF I DIE TONIGHT became:

Amadou Diallo’s father lamenting “When I came here, I saw many people crying ‘Victim of police brutality’.” “Now, I am one of them.”

And, it became….Maureen King, the widow of slain Long Branch, New Jersey police sergeant Patrick King, musing, “Your life just changes in a split-second, forever.”

It became revisiting the scene of the crime with Nicholas Heyward, Sr., a Brooklyn father who lost his 13-year-old son Nicholas Heyward, Jr. to police gunfire, and a New Jersey state trooper being brought to tears as he describes memories of his police work. It became victims’ advocates and a congressman and a community police officer and young men of color from Brooklyn, describing what it’s like to be a police target, and, oh yes, it still has the people in the streets … in Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Manhattan, Boston …

Although the film’s backdrop is the Eastern United States, these scenarios play out over and over from Los Angeles to Atlanta, from Canada to Mexico, from the favelas of Brazil to the cities of Europe and Asia.

IF I DIE TONIGHT is not a “documentary from a distance”. Whether or not one agrees with their viewpoints, the characters elicit instant rapport with and compassion from their audience as they re-live their experiences. IF I DIE TONIGHT is a film about racial profiling, police brutality and the system that allows these enigmas to exist and persist, as seen through the lives and stories of those who are living on both sides of an impenetrable divide.

Le Forum contre la violence policière et l’impunité est un effort de collaboration entre plusieurs militants et militantes pour la justice sociale. Le Forum vise à créer un espace qui nous permettra de discuter, de partager des expériences et de développer des stratégies de lutte pour un monde sans violence policière.

La manière la plus efficace de combattre le harcèlement, le profilage et la violence policière consiste à construire de fortes relations de solidarité et d’entraide au sein de nos différentes luttes et campagnes. Ensemble, nous espérons renforcer nos mouvements contre la violence policière et l’impunité, tout en travaillant à construire un avenir sans violence policière.

The Forum Against Police Violence and Impunity is a collaborative effort by grassroots social justice activists and community organizers to create a space that will allow for discussion, sharing experiences, and developing strategies in the on-going struggle to live free of police violence.

The most effective way to combat police harassment, profiling and violence is by building meaningful relationships of solidarity and mutual aid in our various campaigns and struggles. Together, we hope to strengthen our movements against police violence and impunity in the here and now, while simultaneously working towards building a future society without police violence.
